Frequently Asked Questions
While every child goes through ups and downs, therapy may be helpful if you notice persistent changes in their mood, sleep patterns, or academic performance. If your child seems more withdrawn than usual, expresses frequent hopelessness, or struggles to manage daily stressors, a professional evaluation can provide clarity. Early intervention is often the most effective way to help a young person regain their footing and build resilience.
The initial intake session is focused on gathering information about your child’s history, current challenges, and your goals for therapy. For younger children, I often meet with the parents first, while for teens, the session may be split between the adolescent and the family. This meeting is designed to ensure everyone feels comfortable and to establish a collaborative plan for our work together.
The duration of counseling is highly individualized and depends on the specific needs and goals of the child or family. Some clients find relief and gain necessary skills within a few months, while others benefit from longer-term support as they navigate various developmental stages. We will regularly review progress together to ensure the sessions remain effective and relevant to your child’s growth.
Confidentiality is a cornerstone of the therapeutic relationship and is essential for helping teens feel safe enough to be honest. While I keep the specifics of our conversations private, I always keep parents informed about general progress and any significant safety concerns. Building a "circle of trust" ensures the teen has a private space to grow while the parents remain a vital part of the support system.
I provide in-person counseling sessions at my Naperville office to foster a strong, personal connection and a focused therapeutic environment. For older teens or college students who may have scheduling or transportation challenges, virtual sessions are also available via a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform. We can discuss which format best suits your family’s needs and your child’s comfort level during the intake process.
